Theatre/ Opera
Turandot by Giacomo Puccini
MFA Master's Report
The University of Arizona
Costume Design by Andre Barbe
Advising Professor: Rick Tuckett
For my Master's Report, I was assigned the Opera, Turandot. I was given 13 renderings, designed by Andre Barbe, and had to essentially bid out the show. I needed to research the culture, patterns, fabrics, materials, and cost of building each costume as well as create Draping teams and figure out how many people and how much time was needed to complete each look. On top of the paperwork for this project, I needed to mock up two of the renderings as shown below. Because this was my final Masters project, I used some real materials as well as Muslin to do the finished Mock ups.
The palace dancer's armor and headdress is made from Industrial Felt, Plastic ball containers (that hold toys in quarter vending machines), Plastic Christmas Bulbs, Sculpt-or-coat, and Paint. The bodice, skirt, sleeves, and arm pieces are made from Muslin, Organza, Vinyl, and more plastic ball containers.
The Mock up for Ping is made of Muslin and ribbon. I made the frog closures myself from a cotton braided cord.
I completely Patterned and Built both Mock ups entirely by my myself.
I had 3 weeks from the moment I was assigned this Opera and Renderings to when all paperwork and Mock ups were to be finished presented to the Faculty Committee. I passed.

I was a stitching apprentice under draper, Kjersten Lester-Moratzka working on Arminda's Costumes. I completely stitched, boned, and finished her Corset and did a lot of work on her bodices and skirts. We had to make a clean and distressed version of the same 18th c dress. I helped stitch together the clean bodice and did all of the finishing work on both bodices. Every single flower and leaf had to be hand stitched on after they were cut and fray-checked. I stitched on all of the flower appliqué on the distressed bodice.

I was the draper for Miranda, Alonso, and the Golden Goddess, Ceres. For Miranda, I completely patterned and built her entire dress with the exception of the purple dying which was done by designer, Patrick Holt. For Alonso, I completely patterned and built his entire doublet, trunkhose, and ruff. For Ceres, I completely patterned, draped, and built her entire dress and headdress. The headdress is a pulled felt base with lace and flowers, branches, and other ornaments stitched on top with a real painted dog skull.
